Description

Oberwesel seems to be so popular among trainspotters that one can even hear the town's name in forgein countries when talking about trainspotting in Germany. Having been there a few days ago, I now know why. A sign along the ancient city walls calls the town "city of towers". And the towers are this slightly distinctive feature that makes this place special. Recognizable. And maybe also the fact that one can do trainspotting on 2 different main lines at the same time. Both sides of river Rhine feature a double-track mainline. The left line mainly carries local and intercity passenger traffic featuring EC trains made of austrian (as seen aboth) and swiss rolling stock and a huge variation of german IC and ICE trainsets. The right line features mainly freight traffic by various companies showing many types of rolling stock (And an hourly passenger service).
The train seen aboth, IC 118, is one of the most hunted passenger services throughout germany. During the last years it saw several quite interresting uses of locomotives and cars. Right now that's a DB-IC train made out of ÖBB carriages and a WLB 1116 class pulling them. Last year the train has usually been hauled by a german class 103.
